It was surely the only punk album<\/p>\n > my\u00a0 father even touched, but he liked 88 lines so much, it is sort of a<\/p>\n > twisted father-son timepiece now.<\/p>\n (Dave)<\/strong><\/p>\n I’ve relayed this message to friends and band members since it makes us<\/p>\n feel old (I’m 44) but on the other hand we’ve got quite a bunch of new<\/p>\n Nails’ fans proving the song has stood the test of time even though<\/p>\n generational changes.\u00a0 I believe there is less of a generation gap between<\/p>\n people of our age and yours due to the rock’n’roll era being firmly<\/p>\n entrenched now.\u00a0 My parents grew up in the pre-rock era and hated rock<\/p>\n though my parents like The Beatles and Janis Joplin (!).\u00a0 Some of the<\/p>\n pre-rock era music was awful despite the swing revival.\u00a0 Anyway I<\/p>\n correspond with a Penn State college student who thought 88 Lines was a new<\/p>\n song until she discovered it was released when she was 6!<\/p>\n (Dean)<\/strong><\/p>\n > I was wondering about something. It seems to have the same vocal track,<\/p>\n > although<\/p>\n > the extended drum beats, etc snazz it up nicely and tastefully without<\/p>\n > defacing a classic.<\/p>\n (Dave)<\/strong><\/p>\n Thanks.\u00a0 You’re right in that it is “virtually” identical, yet it was<\/p>\n completely re-recorded with a new vocal track by Marc.\u00a0 As you know the<\/p>\n original 1981 version of 88 Lines is also on Corpus Christi.\u00a0 As far as the<\/p>\n two new versions on it, the re-creation of the 1984 version and what we<\/p>\n call the “house” version, I don’t think they have the same vocal track.<\/p>\n You pose a good question.\u00a0 I’ll have to ask.\u00a0 I helped mix and arrange the<\/p>\n re-creation but had nothing to do with the house version.\u00a0 In addition I<\/p>\n was not involved with CC but my songs appear on it.<\/p>\n (Dean)<\/strong><\/p>\n > As for the Mazda commercial, yes I did see and hear it. I was really<\/p>\n > shocked when I heard that song in an advertisement. Firstly, because of<\/p>\n > the fact that it is relatively obscure. Second, I was surprised that<\/p>\n > whomever made the marketing decision to use the song would want to<\/p>\n > associate its product with a song containing lyrics like those in 88<\/p>\n > Lines. Thirdly, I was surprised that The Nails would want to let their<\/p>\n > song be used in such a context.<\/p>\n (Dave)<\/strong><\/p>\n Well most people think it’s a cool jingle.\u00a0 Only the “in crowd” knows it’s<\/p>\n a real song.\u00a0 That is the gap we are trying to bridge to possibly resurrect<\/p>\n our careers.\u00a0 The marketing decision was made because someone at an ad<\/p>\n agency liked the song, knew the lyrics could be changed and would become a<\/p>\n “cool” factor besides that it’s a great visual commercial that features<\/p>\n women driving a car for a change.\u00a0 You’d think that only men drive cars if<\/p>\n you watch commercials….\u00a0 For us it was an opportunity to get our song out<\/p>\n there to millions and financially capitalize on it for a change.\u00a0 We sold<\/p>\n out and are proud of it.\u00a0 U2 can afford to not have a sponsor on their<\/p>\n tours; the Rolling Stones can afford not to but choose to.\u00a0 Who has more<\/p>\n integrity?<\/p>\n
